AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – A union representing Dutch nurses will launch a national campaign on Friday against demands for sexual services by patients who claim it should be part of their standard care. The union, NU’91, is calling the campaign “I Draw The Line Here,” with an advert that features a young woman covering her face with crossed hands.

The union said in a statement on Thursday that the campaign follows a complaint it had received in the last week from a 24-year-old woman who said a 42-year-old disabled man asked her to provide sexual services as part of his care at home. The young woman witnessed some of the man’s other nurses offering him sexual gratification, the union said. When she refused to do the same, he tried to dismiss her on the grounds that she was unfit to provide care.

“This type of action is not part of the job responsibilities of carers and nurses,” NU’91 said. The case has been reported to police, the union added.

RIO DE JANEIRO – You’ve got mail — and possibly an STD. The Brazilian Health Ministry has created a Web site to let people inform partners they’ve got a sexually transmitted disease via an e-mailed virtual postcard. The official in charge of the ministry’s STD and AIDs programs notes that many people have a hard time telling partners they’re infected.

Mariangela Simao said in a statement this week that the e-mails may help people “to tackle these diseases directly and with minimum exposure.” One of the cards shows a young man reclining in his underwear. It reads: “Hi! I don’t know if this is the best way to tell you, but I’ve learned that I have an STD.” The card suggests the recipient see a doctor.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Florida woman was duped into changing diapers and providing care for a man she met through Craigslist who feigned disabilities. Turns out the man who hired Janet Schulte to look after an adult brother with diminished mental capacity was the same guy she bottle-fed and treated like a child for 3 months.

Schulte said the worst thing is that authorities can’t go after the man because he appears not to have committed any crime. Though the man lied, he typically paid the agreed $600 weekly for her services. Schulte said he never broke character, and on the phone always gave an excuse when she tried to meet his “brother.” She and her husband got suspicious and found the man out after subtle behavior changes and a few late payments.

MADISON, Wis. – A nurse was called out of surgery so a manager could tell her she was being laid off. Dean Health said the surgery was minor and the patient wasn’t affected, but the manager who summoned the nurse from surgery violated medical protocol. Dean Health spokesman Paul Pitas said the incident happened at Dean’s West Clinic in Madison on Wednesday or Thursday.

Pitas said there was a period of time in which a nurse wasn’t present during the procedure. He said while there were other clinical staff present, the absence of a nurse is a violation of patient care procedures. The Madison-based health care provider announced Wednesday that it planned to “immediately” lay off 90 employees. Pitas declined to name the employees involved or what type of surgery the nurse was attending when she was called away.

Teachers at a special needs school in Bangkok alerted authorities on Monday when an autistic pupil, scared of attending his first day at school, sat out on the third-floor ledge and refused to come inside, a police sergeant told AFP.

Despite teachers’ efforts to beckon the boy inside, he refused to budge until his mother mentioned her son’s love of superheroes, prompting fireman Sonchai Yoosabai to take a novel approach to the problem. The rescuer dashed back to his fire station and made a quick change into a Spider-Man costume before returning to the boy, he said. “I told him Spider-Man is here to rescue you, no monsters are going to attack you and I told him to walk slowly towards me as running could be dangerous,” Somchai told local television.

The young boy immediately stood up and walked into his rescuer’s arms, police said. Somchai said he keeps the Spider-Man costume and an outfit of Japanese television character Ultraman at the station in order to liven up school fire drills.

Shamanism traditions and beliefs are a part of modern & ancient American cultures, with a rich history spanning millennia’s, practitioners of shamanism who are known as shaman would communicate with the spirit world.

Villagers would come to shamans to cure ailments, moreover the responsibilities of a shaman would extend to provide guidance to the souls of the dead of recently deceased tribe man and woman. He would serve as the villages “priest”, educating and enlightening locals.

While there are many forms of shamanism throughout the world, shamans share common beliefs such as:

The subconscious of human beings known as Spirits or Souls in some religions play an elemental part of human society.

Through different practices shaman’s can communicate with those in the after life.

Readers of bad omens and assist in preparing people for the after life.

Known in some cultures as healers of sorts and exorciser evil demons and bad spirits from humans.

The shaman utilizes a plant of sorts to enter a trance where he’s able to see the future and travel to far off lands.

Shamans often used plants to enhance their spirit walks, and connect to other worlds and speak with mother nature; among the plants used are Salvia divinorum, Peyote, and Hawaiian Wood rose seeds which were employed to attain a higher spiritual plateau.

As one can imagine society utilized certain means to enable and ensure that the social fabric of their society remained intact, void of any centralized form of government of law enforcement, the role of the shaman as a mediator was an important role to maintain for social cohesion.

As a mediator the shaman would communicate with spirits, mother nature and those who has passed through to the after life, human and animal alike, on behalf of villagers. But more importantly the role of the mediator was seen more than a moral comfort but also had a special significance religiously to members of the community as he would essentially be the gateway to god. Just like the priests are believed to have the hear of God, in the Christian religion.

Its important to outline that many of these so called spiritual bonds were with the aid of substances, such as Salvia, causing hallucinations in shamans who were then able to convey what they saw on the other side or on whatever experience the substance decided to take them. It is known that Shaman’s spent hours even days preparing for such religiously rights, preparing their mind body and soul for the journey ahead.

When Salvia divinorum was induced their preparations allowed them to control the effects and guide their soul’s out of there bodies to venture forth among the stars, undead and living worlds of known space.

For more information on where to buy salvia and legal as well shamanic religious practices visit www.salviaextracts.com

A stillborn Israeli baby who was pronounced dead by doctors “came back to life” on Monday after spending hours in a hospital refrigerator.

The baby, weighing only 600 grams at birth, spent at least five hours inside one of the hospital’s refrigerated storage units, before her parents, who had taken her to be buried, began noticing some movement.

“We unwrapped her and felt she was moving. We didn’t believe it at first. Then she began holding my mother’s hand, and then we saw her open her mouth,” said 26-year-old Faiza Magdoub, the baby’s mother.

The baby was pronounced dead several hours earlier, after doctors at Western Galilee hospital in northern Israel were forced to abort her mother’s pregnancy because of internal bleeding. Magdoub was 23 weeks into her pregnancy.

“We don’t know how to explain this, so when we don’t know how to explain things in the medical world we call it a miracle, and this is probably what happened,” hospital deputy director Moshe Daniel said.

The baby was then taken to the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit for further treatment, but doctors were not sure how long she will live.

Motti Ravid, a professor of internal medicine, told Israel’s Channel 10 that the low temperature inside the cooler had slowed down the baby’s metabolism and likely helped her survive.

A 61-year-old Japanese woman has given birth to a surrogate child, an obstetrician in central Japan said on Wednesday. She is believed to be the oldest surrogate mother yet recorded in Japan.

The woman became pregnant with an embryo created from the egg of her daughter, who has no uterus, and sperm from the daughter’s husband, the maternity clinic involved said in a statement.

The clinic is run by Yahiro Netsu, who has defied longstanding opposition to surrogate births from Japanese obstetricians.

The clinic declined to confirm when the woman gave birth or to give her name, citing privacy concerns.

“The clinic hopes that Japan will hold forward-looking discussions on surrogate births and that it will take place in Japan without abuses,” the clinic said.

Netsu helped eight surrogate mothers become pregnant and give birth between 1999 and 2008, said clinic spokeswoman Chihiro Netsu.

In four of the eight cases, mothers aged 55 to 61 gave birth for their daughters. The remaining four involved women giving birth for their brothers or sisters, she added.

Prior to this case, the oldest surrogate motherhood case known in Japan was a 60-year-old woman who became pregnant in the United States last year with an embryo created from donated egg and sperm.

The man thought the patient would enjoy seeing his stallion, said Lani Yukimura, a spokeswoman at the hospital. He and the horse entered the hospital earlier this month and rode an elevator up to the third floor, where they were met and stopped by security personnel,

Security managed to get the man and the horse out of the hospital, with “just a few scuff marks,” she said.

The hospital has a pet visitation policy, but it’s for dogs and cats, not horses.

“On Kauai, we have a very warm inviting atmosphere at Wilcox,” Yukimura said. “We just hope people understand this is not a place for a horse.”

The man’s good intentions were further dashed when his relative was brought out to see the horse.

“That’s not my horse,” the patient said to hospital staff.

PRAGUE (Reuters) – A Czech couple who decided to take a DNA test to squash persistent pub gossip and prove that their 10-month-old baby was their own got a nasty surprise.

The couple, from the southeastern town of Trebic, had some doubts about the child as her hair was blonde and they both had dark hair. Fellow drinkers’ suspicions got on their nerves.

But the test showed neither of the parents had the same DNA as the baby, Czech news agency CTK reported Wednesday, suggesting a mix-up at the hospital. Authorities were looking into the case.

Long confined to the mountains, Japanese leeches are invading residential areas, causing swelling, itching and general discomfort with their blood-thirsty ways.

Yamabiru, or land leeches, have become a problem in 29 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, according to the Institute for Environmental Culture, a private research facility in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo.

The little suckers are riding into towns and villages, hitching lifts on deer and boar whose numbers have grown due to re-forestation and dwindling rural populations.

Once there, the leeches, which measure in at about 1.5 cms before a meal, take to feasting on warm human flesh.

“Yamabiru will climb into people’s socks and stay for about an hour, growing five to 10 times in size. Unlike with water leeches, people don’t immediately realize they’ve been bitten. Only later when they see their blood-soaked feet, do they realize what has happened,” said Shigekazu Tani, the institute’s director.

“The real problem is that the bleeding won’t stop and the affected area swells up and really itches,” he added.

The best way to deal with the tiny vampires?

“We can cut down trees and mow long grass to dissuade wild animals from coming too close, and create sunny habitats that are inhospitable to leeches. We can also spread pesticides that kill the leeches,” Tani said.

“Or we can just tough it out.”

A marijuana dealer telephoned police after armed thieves stole his quarter-pound stash of pot. The 19-year-old Felton man told police that two men, one of them armed with a handgun, robbed him at gunpoint as he sat in his car on Tuesday night.

“It was unique to have people who were dealing drugs calling us when they’ve been ripped off,” police spokesman Zach Friend said.

After the thieves made off with his stash, the dealer telephoned police. When police arrived, the dealer’s story became progressively confused.

First he showed officers a medical marijuana card and told them he bought the pot at a medical marijuana dispensary. Then he said he got the pot from a friend. Eventually the dealer admitted he had arranged to sell the marijuana to the men who stole it from him, investigators said.

The Felton dealer wasn’t arrested.

“From our standpoint, it’s more important to address the fact there are individuals out there who are willing to use a weapon to commit robberies,” Friend said.
