Officials buy horns to counter coyotes

City officials have purchased 1,000 hand-held boat horns to help residents scare off coyotes. Code compliance manager Dirk Voss said this week he bought the horns early last month after residents complained that coyotes were killing their pets.

“The taxpayers don’t want us to say, ‘It’s not our job,’” Voss said this week. “They want us to come up with something.”

The city spent $5,942 for the aerosol-powered devices that emit shrieks that can be heard up to a half-mile away over land, officials said.

The horns may also come in handy for scaring off stray cats and dogs, Voss said.

But some, like retired city code enforcement officer Joe Avelar, said the idea could cause more problems than it solves.

“You’re going to have disturbing-the-peace problems everywhere,” said Avelar, who now chairs the city’s Inter-Neighborhood Council Forum.

Oh, that’s really intelligent, scare away the stray cats and dogs. Scare them away right into the jaws of the coyotes! How stupid are you morons?! Are you saying it’s ok to chase the stray cats and dogs into the jaws of the coyotes because they’re strays, because it’s better them than your own pets? Guess what? They don’t deserve it any more than your own pets do. Why should they have to suffer because their owners are idiot a**holes? While I know that coyotes have to eat and they are part of the food chain, they serve a purpose, etc., etc., I’ve seen firsthand what coyotes do to pets. I lost a beloved rare Flame Point Siamese cat to a pack of neighborhood coyotes and I wouldn’t wish that misery on any animal, pet or stray. Please, try something more sensible, that not only won’t send stray animals into the jaws of the coyotes, but also won’t cause any disturbing of the peace problems. Maybe more people who are concerned about their pets, should put up fences. If they worried more about their pets instead of having to weed eat around the fence, their pets would be safer.
