Police patrolling the red-light district of the Belgian capital have been ordered to stop visiting brothels and drinking in bars when on duty.

A letter sent to officers in Brussels’ northern police district, and published in a Belgian daily Tuesday, urged them to set a good example and earn the public’s respect.

“These officers think their duty hours are to be used to drink alcohol in bars, practice sports…, visit brothels or massage parlors, and entertain (intimate) relationships with residents of the neighborhood during their patrol,” said the letter from a local police chief. Mailman who held back mail faces dismissal

A Belgian postman who lightened his mailbag by holding back thousands of letters and packages at home for up to five years now faces dismissal.

“What was strange in this case was that he kept them all in his flat and that, while he opened a lot, he appears to have left the contents in the envelopes,” a spokesman for the postal service said.

An internal control alerted the Post Office to the problem and prompted a police search of the man’s home last week.

“A couple of thousand items of mail were found in his flat. We sorted through them last week and they are being sent out today with a note of apology,” the spokesman said. Read the rest of this entry →

Belgians hold mass “wedding” to shame racist couples

Van BellingenHundreds of Belgians renewed wedding vows on Wednesday in a mass protest against racism in a town where three couples had refused to be married by a black registrar.

“We are ashamed that some people in Sint-Niklaas refused to be married by a black registrar … It’s not in keeping with the world today,” said local Walter Graef, beside his wife of 45 years in her original white wedding dress. Read the rest of this entry →
