TROY, Kan. – Residents of a northeast Kansas town are mourning the deaths just hours apart of an elderly couple who were married 67 years. Arnita Yingling died in her sleep early Saturday at the family’s home in Troy. She was 93. Six hours later her 95-year-old husband, Lyle, died at a nursing home in the nearby town of Wathena. Fort Hays State University has fired its debate coach for losing his temper at a tournament, engaging in a videotaped shouting match that included pulling down his shorts to expose his underwear.
University President Edward H. Hammond also announced Friday that the school was immediately suspending its debate program until problems are addressed at the national level. He said it was important to take a stand against the declining standards of college debate. Read the rest of this entry →

A Wichita man is recovering from a gunshot wound to the hand from a pistol that was thrown in the trash, sheriff’s officials said. The 42-year-old man, who was not identified, was helping unload trash Tuesday and accidentally hit the trigger of a discarded short-barreled pistol, wounding his left hand, said Sedgwick County sheriff’s Capt. Mike Oliver. Oliver said witnesses heard the pop and saw the man with blood on his hand at a Wichita trash transfer station Tuesday morning. The gun was loose in the trash and covered with mud. Investigators want to know why it had been thrown away and said it wasn’t immediately clear if the gun was used in a crime.

The chicken toss has been declared off limits at Kansas State. For years, Kansas State students have smuggled live chickens into basketball games against Kansas, then thrown them onto the court and behind the opposing bench before tip-off — mocking their rival’s Jayhawk mascot.
But an animal rights group objected to the mistreatment of chickens, and the school issued an open letter to fans this week calling for an end to the practice. Read the rest of this entry →
