Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani top picks for Halloween costumes

2:03 pm in Entertainment by Nick

Once again, Hillary Rodham Clinton leads in a poll. This time, she was top choice when people were asked which major 2008 presidential candidate would make the scariest Halloween costume.

Asked about costume choices, 37 percent in an Associated Press-Ipsos survey this month chose New York Sen. Clinton, the front-runner among Democratic presidential contenders. Fourteen percent selected former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who leads Republicans in national polls. Read the rest of this entry →

Fundraiser to feature machine guns

2:51 pm in Uncategorized by Net Joker

A planned Republican fundraiser in New Hampshire aims to promote gun ownership in America by letting supporters fire powerful military-style weapons — from Uzi submachine guns to M-16 rifles.

The Manchester Republican Committee is inviting party members and their families to a “Machine Gun Shoot” where, for $25, supporters can spend a day trying out automatic weapons, said organizer Jerry Thibodeau.

“It’s a fun day. It’s a family day,” said Thibodeau of the August 5 event. “It’s quite exciting.” Read the rest of this entry →

Dog Finally Off Washington State Voter Rolls

1:10 am in Uncategorized by Nick

Duncan M. McDonald is finally off the voter rolls after the Australian shepherd-terrier mix was sent absentee ballots for three elections.

King County Elections Director Sherril Huff said she canceled the voter registration Tuesday for the dog owned by Jane K. Balogh, 66, who registered her pet to protest a change in the law that she said made it too easy for non-citizens to cast ballots.

Balogh put her phone bill in the dog’s name, then used that as identification when she mailed in the registration form in April 2006. In November, she wrote “VOID” across Duncan’s ballot and returned it with an image of a paw print on the signature line.

She admitted the ruse when an election official called, but the dog was still sent absentee ballots for school bond elections in February and May.

“Quite frankly, the process did take too long, and it should have been addressed after the November election,” said Bobbie Egan, an elections office spokeswoman.

County election procedures are being reviewed to provide speedier action against voting fraud, Egan said.

The removal came three weeks after Balogh was charged in King County Superior Court with making a false or misleading statement to a public servant, a misdemeanor. She pleaded not guilty to the charge in June.

A sheriff’s investigator wrote that she admitted registering the dog under false pretenses “to make a point that anyone could vote, even an animal.”

A preliminary court hearing was pending.

Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Alan Mulally is no longer laughing about his suggestion that he saved President Bush’s life during a recent White House visit.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker has apologised after Mulally said his claim that he had intervened to prevent U.S. President George W. Bush from plugging an electrical cord into the hydrogen tank of an experimental Ford vehicle had been meant as a joke. Read the rest of this entry →

Transgender Navy vet protests war in U.S. Congress

6:01 am in Uncategorized by Nick

When former CIA operative Valerie Plame testified at a congressional hearing bristling with TV cameras, Midge Potts was right there, a distracting figure in a shocking pink shirt emblazoned with “Impeach Bush Now.”

She’s been ejected, arrested and detained for protests demanding U.S. troops leave Iraq, but that hasn’t deterred the Gulf War veteran, former Republican congressional candidate and transgender woman.

“We shouldn’t be afraid to vocalise our opinion to our elected leaders,” said Potts, one of several members of the Code Pink anti-war group who frequently show up for congressional hearings and debates on Iraq. Read the rest of this entry →

Even unopposed, candidate gets no votes

9:53 am in Uncategorized by Nick

Joe Selle didn’t exactly get voted out office this week, but he wasn’t re-elected, either.  Selle, who was running unopposed for City Council, didn’t get any votes at all. Not even one from himself.  Selle, 42, said he simply forgot that Tuesday was election day, and apparently so did Ward 3′s other 34 registered voters.  The result was zero votes cast in Selle’s race, but the city charter lets him keep the seat unless someone else is “successfully elected and qualified,” the city attorney said.
